During the 1920s, Henri Matisse produced a significant body of lithographic work featuring the female nude, marking a period of exploration into sensuality, line, and form. These lithographs are notable for their elegant economy of line—Matisse reduced the human figure to its essential curves and rhythms, revealing his deep interest in the expressive power of simplicity. Rather than portraying the nude in a classical or romantic manner, Matisse focused on intimacy and immediacy, often depicting women in relaxed, natural poses, sometimes reclining, seated, or grooming. These works reflected his desire to capture the inner calm and quiet sensuality of the model, conveyed through the most fluid and minimal of gestures. Matisse was working in his studio in Nice during this time, where he was surrounded by North African textiles, patterned screens, and decorative objects that often served as backdrops or compositional inspiration. His approach to the nude was not only artistic but choreographic—how a body occupied space and how that space framed or embraced it. Models and Muses Matisse had a close working relationship with a number of professional and semi-professional models. Among the most notable in the 1920s were: Henriette Darricarrère – A ballet dancer turned model, Henriette posed for Matisse for nearly a decade and was the subject of many important works, including oils, drawings, and lithographs. She is often identified in his odalisque series and nude studies. Her grace and poise greatly influenced his portrayal of the feminine figure during this period. Other anonymous or lesser-documented models contributed as well, especially those posing for more spontaneous or intimate studies, but Matisse typically maintained long-term collaborations with a few trusted individuals to develop a visual and emotional rapport.
